Most Tamil families pick a baby's name based on the birth star. The astrologer looks at the jathagam, finds out which nakshatra the moon was in at birth, and gives a starting letter. That's the traditional way. But there's more to it than just the first letter.
Numerology adds another layer. Every letter has a number value. A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, and so on. When you put together a full name, you add up all the letter values and reduce it to a single digit. That single digit is your name number. And different numbers carry different meanings.
For example, number 1 is for leadership. Number 5 is for travel and change. Number 8 is for struggle early in life but success later. So when parents pick a name, they don't just pick any name that starts with the right letter. They pick a name where the total numerology number also works in the child's favour.
This comes from the child's jathagam. The moon's position at the exact time of birth tells you the nakshatra. Each nakshatra has 4 padas, and each pada has a specific starting syllable. So if the baby is born in Ashwini nakshatra, first pada, the starting letter is "Chu". Second pada is "Che". Third pada is "Cho". Fourth pada is "La". The astrologer or this calculator tells you which pada the birth falls in.
Once you know the starting letter, you need to find a name where the total letter values add up to a favourable number. Not every name that starts with "Chu" will give a good numerology number. You have to check. This is where most people get confused and need a calculator.
This is a less common method but quite popular in Tamil Nadu. You write the numerology values of each letter in the name, then add adjacent pairs to form a pyramid. The final number at the top of the pyramid should be a favourable one. Some astrologers check this, some don't. But families who are particular about numerology want all three to match.
Because the nakshatra pada changes roughly every 3 hours and 20 minutes. If the birth time is off even by 30 minutes, the pada might change, and with it, the starting letter changes completely. That's why hospitals now record birth time down to the minute. If your birth certificate says 10:15 AM, use that exact time. Don't round it off.
