Every parent wants to better understand their child. What are his personality traits? What challenges will he potentially experience? What gifts might he have? Increasingly family are utilizing astrology as a vehicle for understanding their children - both in terms of nature and development.
While astrology shouldn't take the place of professional advice whenever necessary, there may be useful insights in a well-constructed natal chart about a child's temperament and learning style.
If you are considering an astrology report for your child, it is helpful to keep in mind some questions to ask and how to look at the information in order to make the most of this experience.
Before requesting a reading, consider your goals and what information you can clarify. The most important piece of information is the time, date, and place of your child's birth. Even a few minutes may change the rising sign and house placements, changing the meanings surrounding their aspects.
Ask the astrologer about their knowledge of children's charts. Some astrologers have primary interest in developmental astrology and thinking about planetary influence across a lifespan, understanding that a child's experience of planetary influence might be different in different stages of development. A good astrological practitioner will emphasize that children are still developing. Any challenging aspects do not mean they will necessarily end-up that way or that they will always experience those aspects this way. Yet, it simply means that these areas will likely require extra care and attention.
Inquire with the astrologer about their training and experience in family astronomy consultations, and ask about how skilled they are at translating astrology terms into something more meaningful or actionable in the context of parenting, education, and communication with your child.
You may want to ask the astrologer for a written report along with or instead of, a verbal consultation. This will allow you to refer back to the report as your child is growing and developing and to see which things that were shared hold true as time goes on..
When reading your child's report from astrology sources, there are a few different areas that deserve special attention. The Sun sign signifies your child's core personality and vigor (how they will naturally express who they are when they feel comfortable and secure), but don't only read the Sun sign, because there is so much more to the puzzle than just the Sun.
The Moon sign is about emotional needs as well as instinctual emotional responses. Moon sign placements can provide understanding to how your child will relate to their feelings, what needs or information will allow them to feel secure, and how they will express emotional necessity via rhythms for rest and activity. For example, a child with a Moon in Cancer may require an abundance of emotional nurturing and family gatherings, while a child with a Moon in Sagittarius may require adventure and new experiences to feel emotionally content.
Last of all, the child's rising sign (also called the ascendant) describes the mask with which they greet the world, how they approach new experiences, and this may influence outward behaviour and appearance at first glance, as well. A rising Capricorn child may appear serious and more mature than their years, while a rising Gemini child may appear more inquisitive and chatty in social situations.
Parents should understand that no chart is perfect, and difficult aspects of planets should not be cause for concern. Consider difficult aspects as areas where the child may need extra help or different solutions. A Mars-Saturn square would suggest a child feeling frustrated when their energy is restricted (e.g., being told to settle down) and the boy or girl might require physical help and structure rather than restrictions. Often difficult aspects represent the child's greatest potential for growth. While a Venus-Pluto aspect can cause relationship intensity, it can also indicate a relationship depth that is transformative; learning how to handle these energies can aid the trouble.
Remember aspects are describing energetic patterns not fixed conditions. A difficult Mercury-Neptune aspect does not mean the child will be confused or deluded - the difficult aspect could indicate a highly imaginative boy or girl but needs some value of grounding along with clear expectations and communications from parents.
Utilize astrological indications to consider your parenting approach, rather than restrict your child's potential. For example, if your child has prominent Aquarius placements, an independent and systematic learning approach may be more appropriate. If your child has heavy influence of Taurus, they may appreciate time for transition, as well as a predictability and routine.
Consider how astrological temperaments may irritate or support each other within your family system. If you can develop an understanding of these dynamics, it can reduce frustration and facilitate communication. An Aries parent may need to slow down for their Virgo child to achieve a common understanding, and recognizing each parent's approach is equally valuable.
Observe your child's natural biorhythms as signified in their chart. Some kids may be inclined to have a later bedtime, others may rise earlier than anticipated, and then, some may require stimulation while others may recharge in a quiet setting.
Keep in mind that children are always changing, and your child's relationship to their natal chart will also change. As your child grows, different planetary transits and progressions will highlight various portions of the chart with unique life themes, styles, and ways for development.
Avoid using astrology as a way to define or confine your child. Statements like "She's a Scorpio, so she must be secretive" can limit a child's natural expression and can induce a self-fulfilling prophecy. Use astrological information to help likely identify and honour a child's natural tendencies, while allowing them to explore other possibilities and develop their entire nature.
A thoughtfully prepared astrology report can offer valuable insights into your child's unique nature and needs. However, it works best when combined with careful observation, open communication, and professional guidance when appropriate. Use astrology as one tool among many for understanding and supporting your child's development, always remembering that every child has the potential to grow beyond any limitations suggested by their birth chart.
The goal isn't to predict your child's future but to better understand their present needs and natural gifts, helping them flourish as the unique individual they're meant to become.
